- I graduated from Carmel High School in 2006

- I have two dogs—Rufus & Sugar

- I was an intern for the Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ) this summer 2008

- I was an intern for Pearson Education Custom Publishing during summer 2007

- I am a HUGE country music fan. I went to the Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, Heidi Newfield and Sugarland concerts this summer!

- I also went to the Dave Matthews Band and Jimmy Buffett concerts this summer!

HI EVERYONE!

Hi everyone! I can't believe summer is already over! I know high schools have already started back for the most part so you all have probably been studying, writing, reading, testing, quizzing and of course...filling out college applications (at least I hope so!).

If you have found this site, hopefully you have already read my introduction and "life story" in Indiana Next magazine. If not and you know nothing about me, turn to page 22 on the Web site's version of the magazine or find me in your paper copy!

PLEASE POST AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK! ASK ME QUESTIONS!

I created this blog to help Indiana high school juniors and seniors (and it doesn't just have to be Indiana students either). I want to be here to answer questions HONESTLY and offer advice. I am the oldest of four kids and I had to go through everything first. Through trial and error I have made it to my junior year at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. and I want to be there to help you all make that important "after high school" decision.

My Short List of Tips for High School Juniors & Seniors

For the juniors in high school, this is often called the toughest year (academic wise). Some of my tips for you:

1) Schedule your SAT or ACT A.S.A.P. After you take your PSAT (a "pre" SAT through your high school), start looking into and scheduling your official SAT or ACT time. Take the SAT at least twice and take the ACT if you are better at English and Science.

2) Don't think you are exempt from academic or extracurricular involvement because you are now an "upperclassman." Stay in the sports and clubs you've been doing. And if you haven't...JOIN SOME!

3) Start visiting school websites. Visit Indiana Next, Indiana Higher Education, and go to the information sessions your school holds for different colleges.

4) IT IS NEVER TO EARLY TO START PLANNING FOR YOUR FUTURE BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL!

For the seniors, this is NO time to slack off. You may think you are on the homestretch, but you still have responsibilities. Here are my tips for you:

1) Trust me when I say colleges will look to see if you kept your grades up your senior year. They will even critique the classes you take. So don't just fill your senior schedule with "easy A's."

2) Make sure you look up the deadline for Early Admission or Rolling Admissions for the colleges/universities/programs you are looking into. Most "Early" deadlines are around the October/November mark, and Regular/Rolling Admissions are usually January/February of your senior year. But DON'T wait until Winter Break to start applying to schools!

3) Look at your Indiana Next magazine for school Web sites, financial aid information, and a timeline for your senior year. Preparing ahead of time will take a lot of stress off of you/your teachers/your family when it comes to the application process.

4) Visit the schools you are interested in. Stay overnight with students, walk around campus without a tour guide, discover it for yourself.
